Santa Susanna competes to improve the packaging recycling results that in 2024 allowed it to obtain the Green Flag of sustainability from Ecovidrio

The campaign recognises the commitment of city councils and hospitality establishments to the recycling of glass containers and the circular economy.

The Santa Susanna City Council and more than 18 hospitality establishments in the town participate in the sixth edition of the Green Flags Movement of Ecovidrio. This campaign serves to encourage and recognize the effort of the local hospitality industry and the activism of coastal municipalities for circularity during the summer, especially with regard to the correct management of their waste.

Last year, Santa Susanna was awarded the Green Flag for Sustainability by Ecovidrio together with the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí.   Of the four municipalities in Catalonia that were in the best position, Santa Susanna is the one that obtained the highest score in the fulfillment of the recycled kilos objectives and also in the degree of involvement of hotel establishments.

In 2025, in addition to the Green Flag, the municipalities of each autonomous community that have obtained the highest score will be rewarded with a cleaning day of one of their beaches, which Ecovidrio will develop in collaboration with the organization Paisaje Limpio, entity specialized in the coordination of this type of environmental initiatives.

Ecovidrio will also recognise the two most responsible hospitality establishments committed to sustainability in Catalonia, evaluating their initiatives to improve waste recycling management, their energy and water consumption or their commitment to sustainable purchasing, among other variables.

III Barometer on Hospitality Sustainability

Within the framework of the VI edition of the Green Flags Movement, Ecovidrio will launch a new edition of the Barometer on Hospitality Sustainability in coastal areas. This is the third edition of this initiative that aims to evaluate the implementation of sustainable practices in the HORECA sector, analyzing four key axes: efficient waste management, energy efficiency, responsible consumption and sustainable use of water.

In the second edition of the barometer, which had the participation of more than 12,000 hospitality establishments, it was revealed that 7 out of 10 establishments located in coastal areas already apply sustainability measures in the management of their businesses. The inspections carried out in the establishments of Santa Susanna showed that they all correctly separate glass, light packaging, paper and cardboard, the organic fraction and used cooking oil.

A commitment to circularity

At the national level, this year there will be more than 180 municipalities and more than 15,000 restaurants, bars and beach bars that will join the Green Flags Movement. Ecovidrio's campaign and the participation of city councils and establishments allowed more than 62,800 tons of glass containers to be collected throughout Spain last year, 16% more than in the summer of 2023. The recycling of these containers achieved:

  • To avoid the emission of more than 36,000 tonnes of CO into the atmosphere, the equivalent of taking more than 17,000 cars off the road for a year.
  • Saving 44,800 MWh of energy, which is equivalent to saving almost 6 million euros in economic savings.
  • Avoid the extraction of more than 75,000 tons of raw materials, equivalent to 7 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.
